How can an image communicate meaning?

Niurka Proano

Assignment:

In Photoshop, drag the butterfly into a new document. Using the selection tool select the butterfly and Scale, rotate and make it transparent. Transform and Repeat this image (Scale, Skew, Rotate) in a creative way in order to express meaning.

I decided to fill up the entire picture with the butterflies by scaling it, rotating it and making it transparent. I used the transform tool a lot to do those things, I was even able to flip the photo horizontally. I used the move tool to place the butterflies all around the photo. I decided to include the shadow of two of the butterflies as well. I worked independently, it was challenging for me because I have never used photoshop before so it was confusing but in the end I got the hang of it a little more. I used the video of the tutorial on how to do the other assignment where we transform our own photo, as a guide and that helped me a lot. I decided to go with purple because it's a vibrant color and goes well with the blue butterflies, it also doesn't overpower the butterflies but it's still a strong color. The requirements were to use the butterfly provided and in a creative way scale the photo, rotate it and make it transparent. My composition is unique with the way I flipped one of the butterflies and placed it next to the original, with those two photos being the only ones that include the shadow of the butterfly as well. The element of art incorporated in my composition is form while the principle of design is pattern. My work symbolizes peacefulness. It is a simple picture that clearly shows the pattern and how I used one photo of the butterfly, in a creative way all around the photo, without leaving any empty spaces. The color is also simple, it's a beautiful color that catches your eye but it doesn't overwhelm you because it goes with the color of the butterfly.
